LONDON, LOVE, LINDY HOP….3 “L” s that reshaped my most important “L”: LIFE
Through this article I am briefly sharing the past 3-4 years of my life’s journey which led to my holiday adventure of 2 weeks in London for the Christmas-New Year’s time that helped me reach another level of consciousness, entertainment and dance.
I will talk about the inspiration I’ve had through:
- London’s energy as a multicultural metropolis,
- meetings with Scott Cupit (Director of Swing Patrol), Lydia Frances & Arianne O’Shea (Swing Patrol)
- the videos I watched with a great comedian,
- the nice dances I had with my partner Will in an Aerials Workshop organized by Swing Patrol,
- the fun I had by dancing with men from London at 3 beautiful parties (some of the parties were having live bands),
- the great inspiration I have received from an 80 years old man I danced with,
- the beautiful energy I felt in the meeting & dance with Simon Selmon & Anna Lambrechts (London Swing Dance Society),
- and last but not least, how the trip in itself and spending time with my family made me realize how fortunate I am.
Seat back, relax and enjoy. As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day…” I continue by saying…” Neither was London experience built in a day.”
PIECES OF MY PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL HISTORY:
Journey starts in the summer of 2014 with a conversation I had (at a National Congress for Ballroom Judges that I participated in), with one of the judges of Romanian Ballroom Federation on life, dance, musicality and history. After the conversation, I have invited his crew – Brasov Swing Dance Society – in my lovely 2014 first edition of “History of a lost Love” International Dance Festival. This is a project that gets together different dances & teachers from Ballroom, Salsa, Bachata, Argentine Tango, Kizomba and Swing, based on musicality, dance connections, history, in a glamorous themed environment of Hollywood 50’s movies. The Lindy Hop show was well received.

The story continues in 2015 with Brasov Swing Dance Society’s proposal for me to take over management, teaching and dancing on the Lindy Hop Bucharest scene, which came to be known as Bucuresti Swing Dance Society. Its influence made me fall in love with Lindy Hop and Charleston and all the joy they bring.

Further studying these dance styles brought in depth understanding of how Salsa and Mambo, took over parts of musicality, movements and music technique from Swing or the connection between Blues and Argentine Tango for example.

It takes time for dreams to come to life. But the most important thing is to dream and plant the seed and feed it with action. And as one of my international artist friend says:” If you dream, dream it big and work for that. Never go small”. Influenced by this idea, in 2016 I started to read about London Swing Dance scene and watch videos of it, so I told myself: “One day I will travel to London. It is a great place for a dancer and I like the English dancing energy, mentality and everything is there in one place: Lindy Hop, Salsa, Kizomba, Argentine Tango, Ballroom, all the dances I have studied for years and I will also have the chance of meeting great dancers and teachers. One day…”
My “One day” turned beautifully into two weeks of great experiences. It has been a beautiful Christmas present from my parents and my sister (she has been living in London for more than 1 year and a half now), who knew about my dream. So, what can I say, three days ahead of Christmas my sister told me: “You know what, I am going to buy you a plane ticket as a Christmas present and you can stay in my house and enjoy your dream”. I thought I was going to cry because I was planning that trip since May 2017 but always something happened on the road and I never made it. I want to thank my parents and sis for supporting me on my way to fulfilling my dreams.
And so, my adventure in London began. MORE about dancing with experienced teachers, inspirational meetings and the energy London has, in the next episodes available HERE:
